SEGi Chemical Engineering Alumna Receives Prestigious IEM Gold Medal Award 2025

SEGi University & Colleges continues to celebrate academic excellence and innovation as Chemical Engineering alumna Ham Kit Ying was awarded the prestigious IEM Gold Medal Award 2025 during the annual IEM Dinner and Awards Night held at Sunway Resort Hotel on 18 April 2026.

Organised by The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia, the award recognises exceptional academic achievement and innovation among engineering graduates across the country. Widely regarded as one of the highest honours for engineering students in Malaysia, the IEM Gold Medal highlights not only academic excellence, but also leadership potential, innovation, and meaningful contribution to the engineering profession.

Kit Ying received the recognition for outstanding academic performance as the best final year engineering student at SEGi University & Colleges. The achievement was further strengthened by two remarkable projects that demonstrated strong technical expertise, sustainability awareness, and practical industry relevance.

The award winning Final Year Project, Corrosion Behaviour of Open-Cell Copper Foam, explored corrosion performance and material behaviour, reflecting the growing importance of advanced materials research within modern engineering applications. In addition, the Design Project titled The Production of 2.2 Kilotonnes Per Annum of Hydrogen Via Biomass Gasification showcased innovative approaches towards sustainable energy production and environmental responsibility through biomass utilisation.

Both projects demonstrated the graduate’s ability to integrate theoretical engineering knowledge with practical application, a critical capability in addressing today’s industrial and environmental challenges. The research also reflected broader priorities within the engineering sector, particularly in sustainability, clean energy, and industrial innovation.

The ceremony gathered distinguished engineers, academics, and industry leaders in celebration of excellence within the engineering profession. Receiving the IEM Gold Medal places Kit Ying among an exceptional group of young engineers recognised for their academic strength, research capabilities, and future potential within the industry.

This achievement also reflects the strength of SEGi’s Chemical Engineering academic and research environment, supported by dedicated academics, industry aligned learning experiences, and a strong culture of innovation. It is expected to inspire current and future engineering students to continue striving for excellence in both academic and professional pursuits.
