SEGi Beaches: Clean Up, Beach! Inspires Engineering Students to Turn Action into Impact

On 18 November 2025 at Pantai Remis, Selangor, SEGi University engineering students took meaningful action for the environment through the SEGi Beaches: Clean Up, Beach! programme, organised under the MPU3253 Co Curriculum Sustainable Thinking course.

A total of 16 students took part, comprising 13 from Electrical and Electronics Engineering and 3 from Civil Engineering. The initiative was led by Nur Haziq Bin Mohamad Nor under the supervision of Ts. Anis Fariza Bin Md Pazil and Dr. Noraidah Binti Mohd Shariff.

Equipped with gloves and rubbish bags, the students collected 19 bags of waste, including plastics, wrappers, and debris hidden along the sand and coastal vegetation. More than a beach clean up, the programme served as an engaging platform for students to witness the real world effects of pollution while applying engineering thinking to sustainability challenges.

The initiative also created valuable opportunities for students to connect engineering concepts with practical environmental solutions. Discussions explored how collected waste could potentially be converted into energy through Waste to Energy systems, turning non recyclable materials into a source of renewable energy. The coastal setting also sparked conversations on tidal and wave energy, encouraging students to think about how engineering technologies such as turbines and wave energy converters can generate cleaner power while preserving marine ecosystems.

This programme reflects SEGi University’s commitment to sustainability and supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These include SDG 14: Life Below Water, through efforts to reduce marine pollution and promote healthier oceans, SDG 15: Life on Land, through the protection of coastal ecosystems, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, by encouraging proper waste management and greater awareness of sustainable energy solutions.

Aligned with SEGi University’s Corporate Social Responsibility agenda, the programme highlights the important role engineers play in shaping sustainable solutions and contributing positively to society. Students described the activity as both practical and inspiring, offering hands on experience in environmental stewardship while deepening their understanding of clean energy applications.

Through initiatives such as SEGi Beaches: Clean Up, Beach!, SEGi University continues to show that education goes beyond the classroom, nurturing future engineers who are innovative, socially responsible, and ready to address tomorrow’s sustainability and energy challenges.
