Royal Selangor Visit: Crafting Education Through Industrial Heritage

Interior Architecture students gained valuable real world learning through an industrial visit to Royal Selangor, where education, craftsmanship, heritage, and design came together in a meaningful professional setting.

The visit provided students with the opportunity to observe how design concepts are translated into tangible products within an established industry environment. Moving beyond classroom based learning, students were exposed to the full process of pewter craftsmanship, from design development and material handling to detailed production and final presentation.

Through this experience, students gained deeper insight into the importance of materiality, spatial composition, detailing, and user experience. These are essential elements in interior architecture, where design is not only about visual appeal, but also about functionality, storytelling, and how people engage with a space or product.

The visit also encouraged experiential learning by allowing students to interact directly with the environment and observe industry professionals at work. This helped strengthen their critical thinking, observation, and problem solving skills, while encouraging them to reflect on how traditional craftsmanship can be integrated with contemporary design approaches.

Royal Selangor’s strong emphasis on heritage and innovation also introduced students to the value of cultural sustainability. They were able to see how traditional skills, cultural identity, and design excellence can be preserved while continuing to evolve for modern audiences.

In addition, the visit offered meaningful industry exposure, helping students better understand real workplace processes, professional standards, and potential career pathways within the design and creative industries. Such experiences are important in preparing students to become confident, competent, and industry ready graduates.

This initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by enhancing learning through practical exposure, professional engagement, and skills development. By connecting academic knowledge with real industry practice, the Royal Selangor visit reflects the importance of education that is relevant, experiential, and future focused.
