From the Heart of the Jungle to the Doors of Possibility: The Journey of Asah and Krisna

On the morning of 31 March 2026, two young girls stood quietly, holding their SPM result slips. To many, they were just pieces of paper. But to Asah A/P Along and Krisna A/P Suri, they carried the weight of years of struggle, courage, and quiet determination.

Because their story did not begin in a classroom.

It began deep in the jungles of Gua Musang, Kelantan, where life follows the rhythm of nature, not timetables. In their world, school was not easily accessible. Electricity was limited, basic facilities were scarce, and daily life revolved around survival. Their families lived off the land, rich in culture and tradition, yet far removed from formal education.

For a long time, a future shaped by education felt out of reach.

Until someone believed it did not have to be that way.

Through the efforts of a compassionate pastor and his team, the potential of children in the community was recognised. They believed these children deserved more than survival. They deserved opportunity. That belief set in motion a journey that would eventually bring Asah and Krisna out of the jungle and into a new environment where they could learn, grow, and be supported.

That journey led them to Hiichiikok Children Home, supported under the HCK Foundation, the charitable arm of HCK Capital Group and SEGi Education Group

It was not just a relocation. It was the beginning of a new life.

Guided by the vision of SEGi Education Group’s Group Managing Director, Tan Sri Clement Hii, the “Bridge to Literacy” initiative welcomed 15 Orang Asli children, including Asah and Krisna. The mission was clear: to break the cycle of poverty through education, while nurturing confidence, discipline, and purpose.

But beyond education, what they needed most was a sense of belonging.

At the home, they found more than shelter. They found warm meals, structure, and a safe environment. Caretakers who guided them patiently. Volunteer teachers who stayed alongside them through every challenge. A support system that never gave up on them, even when they doubted themselves.

The journey was far from easy.

When they first arrived, even understanding basic Malay and English was a challenge. Subjects such as Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah felt overwhelming. There were moments of frustration, self-doubt, and quiet tears. They had heard it before, that they were not “study material”, that education was not meant for them.

For a time, they believed it.

But slowly, something began to change.

With consistent encouragement and guidance, they started to see themselves differently. They began to believe that they could learn, improve, and rewrite their future.

Progress came in small steps. Understanding a word. Completing a sentence. Passing a test. Each milestone built confidence. Each effort, though often unseen, mattered.

They kept going.

Then came the moment that made it all worth it.

When their SPM results were released, the transformation was undeniable. The same girls who once struggled with language passed their exams. The same girls who once failed Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah achieved credits in both subjects. They earned results that now open the door to tertiary education.

They proved something powerful.

They were never incapable. They were simply never given the opportunity.

For Asah and Krisna, this is more than academic success. It is a turning point. From “I cannot” to “I can”. From doubt to belief. From feeling unseen to standing with confidence.

They are now the first Orang Asli children from the home to reach this milestone.

Their achievement reflects what is possible when access, care, and belief come together. It is a reminder of the impact that sustained support and purposeful initiatives can create, not just for individuals, but for entire communities.

This is not just a story about results.

It is a story about hope.
About second chances.
About what can happen when someone chooses to care.

And perhaps most importantly, it is only the beginning.

Stories like Asah and Krisna’s are not the exception. They are part of a larger story shared by many SEGians who refused to let circumstances define their future.

SPM results are only one moment. What matters more is what you choose to do next. Because when opportunity meets belief, everything can change.
