Pharmacogenomics is reshaping the future of healthcare by connecting genetics with drug therapy. Through a better understanding of how genetic variations influence the way patients metabolise and respond to medication, healthcare professionals are moving away from a one size fits all approach towards more personalised, precise, and effective patient care.
The Faculty of Pharmacy at SEGi University, Kota Damansara recently organised a talk on this emerging field, highlighting its growing importance in clinical practice and pharmacy education. The session featured insights from an industry partner, who shared the practical application of pharmacogenomics in real world healthcare scenarios.
The talk emphasised how pharmacogenomics can help reduce adverse drug reactions, improve treatment outcomes, and strengthen patient trust in healthcare systems. For clinical pharmacists, it offers a powerful tool to support better drug selection and dosage optimisation, ensuring that patients receive medication that is safer and more suited to their individual needs.
As genomic technologies continue to advance and testing becomes more accessible, the integration of pharmacogenomics into routine clinical workflows is becoming increasingly possible. Clinical guidelines are already available for selected drug and gene combinations, supporting evidence based decision making in practice. With the further development of electronic health records, pharmacogenomic data may also play a stronger role in clinical decision support systems.
However, the implementation of pharmacogenomics also comes with challenges. These include limited awareness, ethical considerations, data privacy concerns, and the need for specialised training among healthcare professionals. Addressing these areas is essential to ensure that pharmacogenomics can be applied responsibly and effectively in everyday healthcare practice.
This initiative reflects SEGi’s commitment to advancing pharmacy education in line with global standards, innovation, and healthcare impact. By exposing students and healthcare professionals to developments in pharmacogenomics, SEGi continues to prepare future pharmacists who are ready to contribute to precision medicine and the advancement of patient centred care.
Pharmacogenomics represents a pivotal step forward in healthcare. As the field continues to evolve, pharmacists will play an important role in bridging genomic science with clinical application, helping to shape a future where treatment is not only more advanced, but also more personal, safe, and effective.
