Engineering Innovation Shines as Student Wins Gold Medal at InnoFest 2026

Engineering innovation took centre stage as Varsanraaj Vijayan, a final year Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering student from the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, International Islamic University of Technology, FOEBEIT, achieved a major milestone by securing the Gold Medal at InnoFest 2026. The prestigious university level innovation festival was held from 4 to 5 February 2026 and brought together approximately 100 participants competing in the Innovation Challenge category.

Varsanraaj presented a component of his final year project titled Microhardness Evaluation for T Joint of Magnesium Alloy AZ31B with Filler Using Low Power Microwave Welding. The research focuses on the development and evaluation of an innovative and energy efficient welding technique for magnesium alloy AZ31B, a lightweight material of increasing importance in structural, automotive, and industrial applications.

The project was conducted under the expert supervision of Ir. Dr. Shamini Janasekaran and received strong commendation from the panel of judges for its technical rigour, originality, and potential for industrial application. The study demonstrated a robust experimental methodology while addressing critical manufacturing challenges through the use of low power microwave welding, a process that offers improved energy efficiency and material performance.

Among a highly competitive field of participants, Varsanraaj’s work stood out for its meaningful contribution to advanced manufacturing research and sustainable engineering practices. The recognition reflects the high standard of research driven learning and innovation nurtured within FOEBEIT, as well as the faculty’s commitment to producing industry ready engineering graduates.

This achievement underscores the institution’s dedication to academic excellence, applied research, and the cultivation of future ready engineers capable of contributing to technological advancement and sustainable industrial development.
