My Pets Haven Animal Shelter Visitation and Donation Programme Promotes Compassion and Community Engagement
Students from the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology at SEGi University carried out a meaningful volunteer visitation and donation programme at My Pets Haven Animal Shelter on 7 March 2026. Organised as part of the MPU3432 Co Curriculum: Sustainability Thinking course, the initiative aimed to promote community engagement, social responsibility and greater awareness of animal welfare.

The programme followed a successful fundraising carnival held earlier by the students. Inspired by the work of My Pets Haven, the organising team decided to extend their contribution through both financial support and volunteer service. Located in Klang Sentral, Selangor, the shelter has been operated by Ms Aileen Lee Sor Geok since 2011, with a mission to rescue, treat, sterilise and rehome stray animals, giving them a better chance at life.

A total of ten participants, including seven organising committee members and three volunteers, joined the visit. The group departed from SEGi University early in the morning before arriving at the shelter, where they were welcomed and briefed by the shelter management.

Throughout the day, the volunteers assisted with various shelter activities, including walking dogs, cleaning kennels, feeding animals, preparing food for stray animals and supporting general shelter operations. These tasks gave students direct exposure to the daily responsibilities involved in caring for rescued animals.

Beyond the volunteer work, the visit offered students a valuable lesson in empathy, teamwork and compassion. It allowed them to better understand the commitment required to manage an animal shelter and the importance of sustained community support in protecting vulnerable animals.

The funds raised from the earlier carnival were officially donated to My Pets Haven to support the shelter’s operational needs, including food supplies, medical care and animal welfare services. This contribution reflected the students’ effort to turn awareness into meaningful action.

The initiative aligns with SDG 3 Good Health and Wellbeing and SDG 15 Life on Land by encouraging responsible care for animals, promoting kindness and supporting efforts to protect living beings within the wider ecosystem.

Overall, the My Pets Haven Animal Shelter Visitation and Donation Programme demonstrated how student led initiatives can create positive impact beyond the classroom. Through volunteerism, compassion and collective action, the students contributed meaningfully to animal welfare while strengthening their own sense of civic responsibility.
