Students and faculty members from the School of Hospitality, and Tourism Management (SOHTM) had the golden opportunity to visit the Housekeeping Department of Le Meridien Petaling Jaya. The educational visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to the inner workings of hotel operations, particularly in the housekeeping department—an essential yet often underappreciated part of the hospitality industry.

The visit commenced with a warm welcome by the hotel’s leadership team, who introduced the group to Le Meridien’s brand values, service philosophy, and commitment to excellence. Their opening notes highlighted the importance of the housekeeping department in maintaining the hotel’s five-star standards and ensuring guest satisfaction.
The primary objective of the visit was to observe and learn the day-to-day responsibilities carried out by the housekeeping team. Students were introduced to various standard operating procedures (SOPs), including room cleaning routines, turn-down services, inventory management, and the importance of attention to detail in maintaining room hygiene and presentation. Real-time demonstrations offered a valuable glimpse into the efficiency and precision required to manage housekeeping tasks in a busy hotel environment.
In addition to operational insights, the visit also emphasized the department’s management style. The team practices a combination of hands-on leadership and empowerment-based supervision. Supervisors closely monitor performance while fostering teamwork and continuous improvement. This people-first approach has contributed to strong staff morale and consistent service quality.
A key highlight of the visit was the department’s green hospitality initiatives. Le Meridien Petaling Jaya is committed to sustainable practices within its housekeeping operations. These include the use of eco-friendly cleaning products, water-saving laundry equipment, linen reuse programs, and energy-efficient lighting in guest rooms and back-of-house areas. Waste separation and recycling efforts are also diligently followed, aligning with Marriott International’s broader sustainability goals.
The group was then taken on a comprehensive tour of guest rooms, the laundry section, and the linen storage area. Students observed the behind-the-scenes coordination required to manage laundry loads, sort linens, and ensure timely delivery of fresh supplies across all floors. The meticulous organization and cleanliness of these areas reinforced the professionalism and discipline of the housekeeping team.
Overall, the visit to Le Meridien Petaling Jaya offered an invaluable learning experience for SOHTM students. It not only deepened their understanding of housekeeping operations but also inspired them to appreciate the essential role this department plays in creating exceptional guest experiences. The integration of sustainable practices also served as a reminder of the evolving responsibilities of hospitality professionals in today’s environmentally conscious world.
